Since 1985, for thirty-seven years the International Volunteer Day has been celebrated on every 5th of December all over the world, and to mark this special occasion, Young Caritas, the youth volunteer organisation of Caritas Alba Iulia, has launched a drawing competition for young and old alike. The theme of the creative contest was volunteering, including helping others. Entrants could use pencil, crayon, watercolour or acrylic paint on an A4 sheet of paper and send their entries electronically to the volunteer programme staff. The drawings were uploaded to the Young Caritas Facebook page, where anyone could vote for them. Seventeen entries were submitted to the volunteers, three in the youth category and fourteen in the children’s category. The entries included artists from Ojdula, Miercurea Ciuc, Tamașfalău, Aita Mare, Ciumani, Sfântu Gheorghe and Joseni, all of whom presented the theme of the competition to the best of their ability and unique insight. As a result of the public vote, seventeen-year-old Anna-Mária Fábián from Ojdula won the youth category, and the best drawing in the children’s category was made by the fourth-grader Melánia Koncsag from Joseni.

“For the first time in the life of the volunteering programme, we are launching a drawing competition to promote volunteering and, last but not least, in order to raise awareness. We wanted to plant the idea of volunteering and altruistic help in the minds of as many young people as possible, and to see what experiences, feelings and thoughts they have. We received many and very beautiful entries, in which we could see and recognise the thousand faces of helping. It would have been difficult to decide on the most beautiful drawing, so we left it to the public to vote, which could be done by liking the drawing on the Young Caritas social media page. Congratulations to Melánia Koncsag and Anna-Mária Fábián, who collected the most likes, and a heartfelt thank you to all the applicants for sharing their feelings, thoughts and talents with us and the public. We are preparing similar calls for entries in the future and hope that more people will be inspired to create” – said Beáta Bogdán, the coordinator of the Caritas volunteer programme from Covasna county.
