Culture, play and community – Excursion to Lăzarea within the „Rise” project

The „Rise” project of Caritas Alba Iulia not only provides support, but also offers a large variety of experiences to the youth. Most of these experiences help young people learn, grow and recharge. Recently, a cheerful and open-minded group of young people set off together to discover the treasures of Lăzarea. The excursion was organized with the help of a local supporter, who not only assisted in coordinating the programs, but also wholeheartedly presented her hometown.
The program was organized with joint efforts. From the „Open Hands” Association, Magdika was the one who joined us, and thanks to her team, the trip itself and a good lunch took place. From Caritas Alba Iulia, the mentor András Borbély accompanied the young people, while the professional guidance throughout the day was provided by art historian Emese Pál.

Upon arrival, a short journey into local history followed: the young people learned that Lajos Rafi, the most renowned Hungarian-Roma poet from Transylvania, once lived there, that the jewel of the town is the Lázár Castle, and that the Sculpture Park of the local Art Community is a truly unique landmark of contemporary art in Transylvania.

First, we explored the imposing walls of Lázár Castle, where Emese’s vivid stories brought to life the knights’ hall, the chapel, the hunting hall, and the castle’s hidden corners. Afterwards, a playful task awaited the youngsters in the Sculpture Park: each one had to find their „own” artwork, and then we discussed together what each piece might convey.

In the pavilion overlooking the park, Emese spoke about the diversity of a career in art history – from monument preservation to museology – and about the way she found her vocation. Finally, after lunch, the day ended with shared play and laughter on the outdoor football field, so that everyone could return home with cherished moments and in good mood.

This excursion was not only about visiting beautiful places, but also about showing that culture, community, and learning can go hand in hand, and that together, with openness, everyone can bring out the best in themselves.
