CV makes the candidate

“What is the boss`s work style personality like?”, “Will there be any breaks?”, “How will my coworkers be?”, “Do I need to buy my drinking water?”, “Will the weekends be free?”, “Will I have a contract?”, “How do I know it’s not a deception?”, “What happens in case of an accident?”, “How is the company evaluated?”, “What will my duties be?”, “Variety is important.”, “A nice boss is someone who`s flexible, understands and allows to solve my problems, if I have emergencies.” – This is how teenagers describe the most important criteria for an attractive job advertisement and some of the characteristics of an ideal job.

Many of them have already worked. They’ve experienced what is like to struggle an entire summer without a day off, to work for a good friend for the sake of friendship, and to be a man of all work in the retail store where you were originally hired as a scone maker. Even though they applied for seasonal work, their hiring process started with CV writing and continued with the job interview. These were the situations they were able to gain some experience which they can now share with their peers at the vocational camp, organised by the mentors of the Find Your Way To The World Of Work project of Caritas Alba Iulia in the Csíky Garden in Gheorgheni in between the 21st to 24th of February.

On the third day, my colleague Simon Orsolya, a human resources manager, and I entered the romantic, giddy, chortly, yet adult, smart and tendentious world of young people. We learned from them how a winner job advertisement should look like, the importance of confidence and aesthetics.

They were reassured by the human resources manager that good looks, appearance and the way of presentation, as well as first impressions, are indeed important not just in case of a job advertisement, but in case of the CV, the cover letter and the very person of the candidate. It makes all the difference whether a candidate sends a negligent, thoughtless, overly long or too short document containing unnecessary or inappropriate information, or a put together, well thought, edited and striking document. Clothes don`t make the man indeed, however, it says a lot about a candidate if they show up in a miniskirt, bare shoulders, wrinkled clothes and dirty fingernails to an interview. In contrast, clean, neat clothes and a well-groomed appearance makes a good impression and shows a high level of pretentiousness. Even though externality is important, one`s level of qualification, skills, personality and confidence are more important than appearance.

Dos and dont`s
What we shouldn’t write in a CV?
– Never include your weight, the number of siblings or children you have. It`s not good to emotionally manipulate your prospective employer. It`s unnecessary to list all your jobs, especially if you change your jobs every month and if they are irrelevant to the job you are applying for.
What should your CV contain?
– Personal information such as your name, address, contact details, main studies, language exams, relevant experience to the job you are applying for.
What to write in the cover letter?
– If you have learnt a foreign language while working abroad but you don`t have a certification, you can mention this in the cover letter.
How to behave in a job interview?
– It`s common for applicants to sit in the waiting room with their legs crossed and arms folded. This has been experienced by young people who have taken on the role of the applicant when pretending to be in an interview situation. But who would have thought that the members of the interview panel could also be tense? Certainly noone until they tried sitting in the opposite chair to the candidate and asking clever questions.
