Jogging: Mentor’s and mentee’s common passion

As they spend more and more time with each other, the mentors and mentored youth get closer to each other, and they develop relationships based on trust and friendship. This is also evidenced by the fact that the youth from Gheorgheni got interested in their mentor’s weekend runs. Below you can read the writing of our mentor from Gheorgheni, Garai-Balázs Levente, about the first joint jogging.

Friday afternoon, on the 14th of February 2020, thanks to the interest of several young people, we planned a joint run. As they know I often go jogging, they often ask questions and come up with similar suggestions. I thought they were only interested in principle, but this time I tried it.

As they know I often go jogging, they often ask questions and come up with similar suggestions. I thought they were only interested in principle, but this time I tried it. I planned a short, 5-6km distance, in a place where it wouldn’t be difficult, but it would require some challenges and performance. There was a hill part, asphalt, forest and terrain on a field. Of the 6-8 people interested, two showed up after school. The distance was successfully completed. Although they couldn’t run all the way through, I was impressed and – based on my impression and feedback – they were open to repeat the task.
I still have a question about the framework within which we can achieve this aim. Note that, according to our conversation, one of their seemingly inaccessible desires is a multi-day summer camping in the mountains, forests.

On February 21st, our mentor and the students repeated the run, with a 50% increase in the number of participants. We hope that the running club will be expanded with more members in the future.
