To give a starting point at home for youth
The Find your way to the world of work project is funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA and Norway Grants Fund for Youth Employment.
As part of the Find Your Way to the World of Work project, on the 6th of July 2020 we held a career orientation training. The sessions for disadvantaged youth from Gheorgheni and Odorheiu Secuiesc regions were held in an open environment on the Deșag stream near Zetea. For the rest of the summer, similar programs and camps will be organized to help young people finding a job in their home country.
In 2018, Caritas launched an initiative to encourage employment and combat early school leaving among disadvantaged young people. After the partner search and the field survey, educational institutions were involved in the work to help young people plan their career choices and further studies together.
However, the work of the mentors was thoroughly reorganized by the pandemic situation: in the absence of face-to-face meetings, they had to use opportunities such as online sessions and telephone talks. They would like to supplement all this with various activities during the summer.
– After the restrictions were lifted, on July 6 we held a one-day career orientation training outdoors led by consultant András Gabriella, which we would like to repeat during the summer. Our goal is to help young people find the right job and to reduce the phenomenon of emigrating abroad – commented youth mentor Zsuzsa Szabó.
She also mentioned that the summer sessions will be open to all young people who are interested in the issues that arise.
In the Find Your Way to the World of Work project, we are planning two further summer camps: one will be a three-day skills development camp where we will welcome young people from Gheorgheni and Odorheiu Secuiesc. The main program points will be music therapy sessions and introduction to photography. In the middle of August, a hiking-based, career orientation camp will be held in the vicinity of Gheorgheni with many excursions and professional-led activities.
Reviewing the results of the project so far, Zsuzsa Szabó said that they are moving in the right direction, as the team has recently expanded with new mentees. A positive aspect in employing these young people is that the mentors are able to reach more and more entrepreneurs who are willing to employ socially disadvantaged young people, there are also examples where the company manager has also provided housing for the young worker.
The initiative, which is present in several European countries, concerns Mureş and Harghita counties in Romania.
